Competition for Zaryadye park
“Zaryadye Gardens” concept was done for an international competition by a Dutch-Russian team of architects. Dutch company MVRDV was the leader of the consortium, while ATRIUM was their Russian partner. The main design idea of this project is combining images of the past with the vision of the future. Drawing upon the rich history of the site the architects created a concept that manages to manifest new values for the site (sustainability, innovation, accessibility, cultural wealth etc) while at the same time exposing the multiple historical layers.

An elaborate path network traces the contours of various historical layers of buildings and streets, outlining a kaleidoscope of gardens. There are 750 gardens, and they are as diverse in their size and character as Russian nature itself. The plots, that in the 19th century were yards, become apple orchards in reference to traditional dacha gardens; streets are planted with prairie plants and evergreens are planted where old buildings used to stand, becoming memorial gardens. There are also gardens devoted to the archeological sites that will be unearthed during construction works. New kiosks are hidden from sight by vines.
For parking and larger facilities, the remaining foundations of “Rossia” hotel are used. It’s size allowed to have an unusual parking plan, to create a central space with an information center “Moscow Gates” and to even bring gardens to the lower level. On the ground level, chains of ponds represent the contours of “Rossia” hotel. “Moscow Gates” is highlighted with a dome that represents a hill and works as a viewing platform to enjoy the park’s surroundings, it’s glass panes also giving glimpses of what is happening below. Pedestrian bridges connect the park to the public spaces of the embankment and numerous exits from the park provide an excellent connection to surrounding streets. The main pedestrian connection being to the Red Square.
